This is a collaborative bowl by Linda Tafoya and her brother, Melvin Tafoya. They are both children of Lee & Betty Tafoya and grandchildren of Margaret Tafoya. Mel made the bowl and Linda carved the bear paws and polished the surface. The bear paw is symbolic of a story where a bear led the Pueblo people to water during a drought. Of equal interest, each potter devises their own style of bear paw as a “signature” of sorts. The bear paw is carved into the clay before the piece is polished. This bowl is highly polished, as expected from Linda. The bowl is fired a deep black. It is signed on the bottom, “Mel Tafoya, Linda Tafoya-Oyenque, Brother and Sister”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

Linda Tafoya-Sanchez
Linda learned the art of making Pueblo pottery from her parents, Lee and Betty Tafoya, and she is the granddaughter of Margaret Tafoya. Her early pottery was signed "Linda Tafoya-Oyenque" when she lived in San Juan Pueblo. She lives near Santa Clara Pueblo and signs her pottery, "Linda Tafoya-Sanchez." She has won numerous awards for pottery at Santa Fe Indian Market and Heard Indian Market. She was also featured on the front cover of New Mexico Magazine in August 2006 and a featured artist in the 2011 Santa Fe Indian Market Magazine. Linda's polish and deep carving in her melon bowl design brings each piece an excellent complete polish reflection. In addition, she often uses a dimension of micaceous clay in her matte finish to complete the character of each work. Tafoya, Melvin (b. 1957)
Melvin or Mel, as he prefers to be called is the grandson of Margaret and Alcario Tafoya and eldest son of Lee and Betty Tafoya. He is the brother of Phillis Tafoya-Bustos and Linda Tafoya-Sanchez. He is the father of Stephanie Tafoya. He mostly made pottery in his teens and in collaboration with his sisters. Today he no longer makes pottery but is an administrator at Santa Clara Pueblo.
