Tafoya, Ray – Red Bowl with Mimbres Elk and Deer (1981)

2.75"w x 1.75"h

$ 600.00

This wide bowl by Ray Tafoya is from 1981. It is an earlier piece of his pottery. The piece is fully polished and etched.  The top has a Mimbres Deer and a Mimbres elk.  Separating them are prayer feather, mountain and plant designs.  Note the matte red areas where the bowl was polished but just the polished areas have been etched away but not deep enough to get to the tan of the clay body!  This is always a difficult technique.  The remainder is fully polished.  It is an exceptional early piece in terms of design.  The seedpot is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom with his hallmark which is a White Mountain (his name in Tewa).
