This new carved bowl by Linda Tafoya-Sanchez is striking in design and polish.  The bowl is round in shape and fully carved.  On the top are 25 swirling flower petals.  There are an additional 25 swirling up from the base of the piece.  Separating them are 25 diamond-shaped sections meant to represent the center of the flower. The sections around the center are polished while the 25 above and the 25 below are slipped with mica. All the carved areas are stone-polished. The unusual part of this piece, of course, is the lid.  The lid is sculpted in the shape of a butterfly.  The wings are polished, on both sides.  There are inset pieces of coral and turquoise for the eyes.  The antennae are leather.  The lid sits into the top of the bowl.  Both the lid and the bowl were traditionally fired to a glassy black coloration. It is signed on the bottom, “Linda Tafoya-Sanchez”.
