Vangie Tafoya is a granddaughter of Maria Sanchez Colaque and the mother of Helen Henderson and Brenda Tafoya.  She is known for her polished and incised pottery.  This large jar is coil-built.  Half of the piece is polished in sections of red and tan.  The jar has a large brown polished area with a large incised bear paw surrounded by feathers.  There are additional bear tracks extending up to the rim. The tan polished swirl section has etched feathers and clouds.  Near the base is an additional section that is polished dark brown with rain and feather designs.  The jar has a bear lid that is realistic in form with an etched lightning design on the back.  There are four different colors of clay on the bowl.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Vangie Tafoya”.  The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
