Tenorio, Thomas – 18″ Tall Jar with Flowers and Dragonflies
Thomas Tenorio is from the Aguilar family of Kewa Pueblo. Amazingly, he taught himself to make pottery! This large jar is a distinctive shape with a very high shoulder and short neck. The jar is fully designed with flowers and dragonflies. The flowers are intricately painted onto the jar and note how the petals and leaves have classic Kewa rain and geometric designs! The jar is striking in appearance with the contrasting red and black coloration against the white clay slip. The rim of the jar has a spirit line, or a space in the painting on the rim, which is seen in traditional Kewa pottery. The piece is signed on the bottom, “Thomas Tenorio”.
