This is a distinctive shape jar by Acoma potter Dorothy Torivio. She was among the first to utilize and then refine the “op-art” style in her Acoma pottery. She took classic Acoma patterns and then repeated them on a vessel, ranging the size from small to large and then small again, in accordance with the shape of the vessel. This jar has a wide shoulder and a short neck. There are 16 bands of triangular mountain designs which swirl down from the neck. Zoom in on the rick and note how tiny she begins the pattern and then enlarges it as it rounds down to the shoulder! Dorothy created this shape just to help emphasize her designs. The jar is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is signed on the bottom. It is definitely a classic of her pottery!
