Torivio, Dorothy – 12″ Wide “Fluttering Butterflies” Large Seedpot, Ribbon (1994)
$ 8,000.00
WOW! This is a spectacular large seedpot by Dorothy Torivio. The piece is coil-built and painted with bee-weed. It is entitled, “Fluttering Butterflies”. The piece has a flat top and it is fully painted across the entire surface. The design is a series of interlocking butterflies and note how TINY they are at the opening! It was not often that Dorothy made pieces this size. It is amazing in person! We had a museum mount made for the piece so it would show off the design! Dorothy was among the first to utilize and then refine the “op-art” style in her Acoma pottery. She took classic Acoma patterns and then repeated them on a vessel, ranging the size from small to large and then small again, in accordance with the shape of the vessel. The open space of the white and the contrasting black give the jar a very modern appearance. The piece is signed on the bottom, “Dorothy Torivio” and it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It has a Blue Ribbon from the 1994 Santa Fe Indian Market.
