Torivio, Dorothy -Jar with Snowflake Design (1980s)

4.5"w x 2.5"h

$ 900.00

This is a classic wide shoulder jar by Dorothy Torivio.  She was among the first to utilize and then refine the “op-art” style in her Acoma pottery. She took classic Acoma patterns and then repeated them on a vessel, ranging the size from small to large and then small again, in accordance with the shape of the vessel.  The jar has a wide shoulder and tiny neck.  There is a snowflake pattern that extends from the rim to the base.  It gets larger as it reaches the shoulder.  The designs are connected by thin fine-lines.  This is one design that she made very infrequently but it is visually one of her most intricate.  The open space of the white and the contrasting black give the jar a very modern appearance.  The jar is signed on the bottom, “Dorothy Torivio” and it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
