Tosa, Persingula – 10″ Tall Water Jar with Interlocking Butterfly Design (1960s)

9.5"w x 10"h

$ 700.00

Persignula Tosa (1923-1996) was a daughter of Lupe Romero and the mother Pauline Romero and mother-in-law of Christine Tosa.  She taught both of them to make pottery.  Persingula was well known for her figurative pottery and began signing in the 1940s. This is one of her few vessels.  It is exceptional in person!  The jar is coil-built and thin-walled.  Near the base, the jar is slipped red.  It is painted around the surface with a tightly designed series of interlocking butterflies.  Separating the butterflies are linear rain designs.  It’s not often that we get in her vessels and especially one this large and perfectly painted!  The piece is signed on the bottom, “Persingula Tosa”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
