Tosa, Persingula – Large Canteen with Eagle Design (1960s)

9"w x 9.25"h x 5" deep

$ 550.00

Persingula Tosa (1923-1996) was a daughter of Lupe Romero and the mother Pauline Romero and mother-in-law of Christine Tosa.  She taught both of them to make pottery.  Persingula was well known for her figurative pottery and began signing in the 1940s. This is one of her few vessels.  It is exceptional in person!  The canteen is matte on the front and polished on the sides.  The design is a large eagle painted with clay slips. The canteen was traditionally fired so there are some color variations to the surface.  However, it is the eagle that is so striking in person with highly detailed designs. The piece is signed on the bottom, “P. Tosa”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
