This is a striking new jar by Maxine Toya and her daughter, Dominque Toya. Dominque made the jar and Maxine painted the designs. The jar is a classic water jar shape. The neck and base are both slipped with mica. The body of the jar is fully painted with five colors of clay to create the designs! The jar has a bird, a Corn Maiden, and a running deer. Each is under a multi-color rainbow. Separating them are white, red, and yellow corn plants, representing the different directions. The detail and complexity of the design on this jar are exceptional. Maxine is always so masterful at her painting and it’s exciting to see her work on larger, classic vessels. Dominique’s water jar is a perfect “canvas” for all the designs! The jar was traditionally fired. The piece is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Maxine Toya + Dominque Toya”.

Dominique Toya
Dominique Toya is one of the leading Jemez potters working today. She learned to make pottery from her mother Maxine Toya and is a niece of Laura Gachupin and a granddaughter of Marie G. Romero. Dominique has created her distinctive style of pottery using native clay and micaceous clay slips for the surface. Dominique has won numerous awards for her pottery, including "Best of Pottery" at the Heard Indian Market. Her pieces can also be found in museums throughout the country, including the Eiteljorg, the Heard Museum, the Peabody Essex and the Denver Art Museum. Her awards include; Best of Classification at the Heard Indian Market - 2008, Best of Classification at the Santa Fe Indian Market - 2009, Best of Classification at the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial - 2009, Best of Show at the Eiteljorg Indian market in Indianapolis - 2010, and Best of Division at the Santa Fe Indian market - 2013.Toya, Maxine (b. 1948)

Maxine Toya
Maxine Toya is a granddaughter of Persingula Gachupin, a daughter of Marie Romero and a sister of Laura Gachupin. She is also the mother of noted potter Dominique Toya. Maxine is among the most renowned potters at Jemez Pueblo for her storytellers and other figurative works. She learned to make pottery from her grandmother and mother. Over the years she has won numerous awards for her work at Santa Fe Indian Market and the New Mexico State Fair.
