Toya, Maxine & Dominique – Polychrome Jar with Deer and Corn

6.5"w x 6"h

$ 2,500.00

This is a striking new jar by Maxine Toya and her daughter, Dominque Toya. Dominque made the jar and Maxine painted the designs. The jar is a classic water jar shape. The neck and base are both slipped with mica.  The body of the jar is fully painted with six colors of clay to create the designs!  There are three larger scenes.  Each has deer painted in the classic Pueblo two-dimensional style.  One section has two running deer, the next has a single deer with mountains in the background.  The final one is a heartline deer with a plant.  Over each deer is a rainbow.  Separating the deer are corn plants.  Did you notice that there is red, white, and yellow corn?  There is a wonderful beauty in the designs of the corn and the deer as they create a sense of story.  The complexity of the painting and the use of so many colors of clay are amazing on this jar. It is certainly an elegant piece by these two exceptional potters.  The piece is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Maxine Toya + Dominque Toya”.
