This is a classic storyteller by Dorothy Trujillo.  She was originally from Jemez Pueblo but married and moved to Cochiti Pueblo. She learned to make pottery from her mother, Carrie Reid (Laguna). Her sisters Lupe Lucero, Fannie Wall Loretto, and Mary Toya are also well-known potters. Dorothy was known for her distinctive style of storyteller figures. In the 1950’s she married Onofre Trujillo and moved to Cochiti Pueblo and began to use Cochiti clay for her pottery and her husband’s aunt, Damacia Cordero, became her mentor.   This is one of her classic storyteller figures.  Dorothy’s storytellers are immediately recognizable by their eyes and round head.  The mother on this figure has a detailed squash blossom necklace!  She has six children.  One has a football, one a ball, one a squash and one a block.  The piece is painted with clay slips.  Note the detail on the necklace and the back of the figure.  It is signed on the bottom, “D. Trujillo”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
