Tso, Jared – 13″ Tall Four Sharp Shoulder Jar

This is a thin-walled tall jar by Jared Tso. He is one of the rising stars of Native pottery. He is a grandson of potter Faye Tso and his pottery is exceptionally refined in technique and traditional in style. Each piece is coil-built from traditional native Navajo clay and traditionally fired. This jar is one in a new series with multiple sharp shoulders. Technically, they are interesting pieces as at each edge, to continue to build up, they round inward and then back out to the next shoulder! The sharp edge of each shoulder is visually striking and creates interesting angles for the light. This jar has four sharp shoulders and then it rounds up to the rim. The jar was polished at an angle so there is a swirl to the surface. The piece was traditionally fired and the blushes are exceptional, ranging from black to red to brown. After the firing, it was covered in pinon pitch. It is exciting to see an artist find inspiration in the historic work, and, using the same clays, refine them in a modernistic manner. The jar is signed, “Jared Tso”.

Jared Tso
Jared Tso is a fourth-generation Dine potter and a grandson of the famous Navajo potter Faye Tso. Each piece he builds is coil-built, burnished, and traditionally fired. Not only is he a potter, but he also has a degree in electrical engineering and his masters in fine art ceramics! Jared has made a life out of pottery and taught ceramics full-time at Diné College in Tsaile, Arizona.
