This is a thin-walled tall jar by Jared Tso.  He is one of the rising stars of Native pottery.  He is a grandson of potter Faye Tso and his pottery is exceptionally refined in technique and traditional in style.  Each piece is coil-built from traditional native Navajo clay and traditionally fired.  This jar is an unusual shape with two sharp edges near the base and a rounded top.  The piece is entitled “A Cloudy Night”. The is the moon hidden by the clouds.  The sharp edges are the shadowy reflections on the hills and landscape, always in motion.  It is a creative shape, striking coloration, and complex form.  The jar is polished at an angle.  It was fired black with slight color variations across the surface that accentuate the swirl polish.  After the firing, the jar is then covered in pinon pitch.  It is exciting to see an artist find inspiration in the historic work and, using the same clays, refine them in a modernistic manner.  The jar is signed, “Jared Tso”.
