Tso, Jared – White Jar with Swirl Polish, Double Sharp Shoulder and Incised Band

7.5"w x 11.5"h

$ 3,300.00

This is a thin-walled tall jar by Jared Tso.  He is one of the rising stars of Native pottery.  He is a grandson of potter Faye Tso and his pottery is exceptionally refined in technique and traditional in style.  Each piece is coil-built from traditional native Navajo clay and traditionally fired.  This jar has a series of multiple sharp shoulders.  Technically, they are interesting pieces as at each edge, to continue to build up, they round inward and then back out to the next shoulder!  This jar has two sharp shoulders.  The rim is also rounded inward.  There is an incised band running from the rim to the base. There are four deeply incised lines with small notches within the design. Jared said it was as if there was a string with “beading” on it and the horizontal lines represent the beads.  The jar was stone polished at a swirl on each of the levels of the jar!  The piece was traditionally fired and the blushes are exceptional, ranging from black to red to brown.  After the firing, it was covered in pinon pitch.  It is exciting to see an artist find inspiration in the historic work, and, using the same clays, refine them in a modernistic manner.  The jar is signed, “Jared Tso”.
