This is an oval bowl with bear handles from the 1930s.  The bowl is made from native clay and fully polished. The inside of the bowl and bottom are also fully polished.  It is the polished bottom that probably dates this piece to the late 1920s or early 1930s. Both of the bears are also fully polished.  Much like bear paws on a water jar, the bear or fox handles on various pieces from Santa Clara were created in an individual style that denoted a particular artist.  This is a charming piece and most often the handles do not survive over time.  It’s great to see a piece in such good condition!  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
