Sergio Lugo is the middle son of noted potter Nancy Youngblood and a brother to Joseph Lugo and Christopher Youngblood.  He learned to make pottery from his mother.  Each piece is coil-built, carved or painted, stone polished, and traditionally fired. This large bowl is entitled, “32, 64, or 128”. The title refers to the number of carved ribs on the bowl.  There are 32 carved around the top, and they extend downward but are interrupted three times by horizontal bands of design. This means he has to continue the design in the next section so it looks continuous in form, but is actually a new band of pattern. Each of the melon ribs has a sharp edge and is slipped with black clay. The top and bottom horizontal bands are polished red and etched with a triangular mountain design. The central one is more complex, with an angular wavy pattern that is slipped with mica and diamond shapes above and below that are polished.  The variations of carving, sgraffito, in addition to matte, micaceous, and polished surfaces, make this an exceptional piece on every level! The bowl was traditionally fired.  It is a creative use of design and form.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Sergio Lugo”.
