Sergio Lugo is the middle son of noted potter Nancy Youngblood and a brother to Joseph Lugo and Christopher Youngblood.  He learned to make pottery from his mother.  Each piece is coil-built, carved or painted, stone polished, and traditionally fired. This large bowl is entitled, “Double Avanyu, Double Rainbow, Double Mountain”.  The bowl has a painted avanyu on the top and the bottom.  Above the shoulder are carved and rounded rainbows.  Below the shoulder are carved and rounded mountains.  Around the center is a stylized sun design. The bowl is deeply carved and all the carving is rounded out and slipped with black and red clay.  It is a striking contrast of color, carving, shadows, and tightly painted designs.  Even the base is carved with a water design, emanating upward to the rest of the design!  The bowl was traditionally fired.  It is a creative use of design and form.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Sergio Lugo”.
