Sergio Lugo is the middle son of noted potter Nancy Youngblood and a brother to Joseph Lugo and Christopher Youngblood. He learned to make pottery from his mother. Each piece is coil-built, carved or painted, stone polished, and traditionally fired. This large bowl is entitled, “The Gear”. Sergio has created dramatic pieces like this bowl in the past but in red and black. This is the first time he has done it in black! There are 4 rows of 32 sharp ribs between bands of highly polished black. Each rib is carved at an angle and is micaceous slipped. Note how in each row the ribs change directions! As well, check out the top view, which creates a very mechanical appearance. The bowl was traditionally fired. It is a creative use of design and form. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Sergio Lugo”.
