Sergio Lugo is the middle son of noted potter Nancy Youngblood and a brother to Joseph Lugo and Christopher Youngblood.  He learned to make pottery from his mother.  Each piece is coil-built, carved or painted, stone polished, and traditionally fired. This jar is entitled, “The Traveler”.  It is deeply carved around the center with fluid geometric and angular designs.  The carved area is highly polished.  The top and bottom areas are matte.  The carved design also has an etched eye as the design.  Sergio said of his eye design:

“In many cultures, the eye represents spiritual awakening and enlightenment.  For me, this is my rendition of the theme.  It is a symbol of protection, of being watched over.  On this jar, it is the traveller, a sign of flowing for enlightenment.”

The contrast of sgraffito, carved, matte, and polished surfaces is striking.   It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Sergio Lugo”.
