This is an amazing collaborative set by Nancy Youngblood (Santa Clara) and Maxine Toya (Jemez). The set is inspired by a famous photo of Margaret Tafoya surrounded by her pottery and was featured on the book by Mary Ellen Blair. There is a framed version of the photo that comes with the set. First, Maxine created a clay base with small raised areas and she sculpted a clay figure of Margaret Tafoya. She is sitting and has her hands in front of her for holding a vessel. Next, Nancy Youngblood created 9 pieces of traditional pottery to replicate the pieces in the photograph! There are three double shoulder water jars with bear paws that were fired black. There is one double shoulder water jar that was fired red. There is a jar with a carved avanyu that was fired black and another one that was fired red. There is a carved wedding vase. Finally there is a storage jar that is fully polished and has bear paws. It is the largest of the pieces and the shape and polishing are simply perfect! Each piece can be placed on the clay base in the same position as in the photo! Nancy added on additional piece, a melon jar with eight carved and polished ribs, that Margaret is holding. The amount of time and attention to detail for this set is amazing. Each piece by Nancy is signed on the bottom in the clay. The piece by Maxine is signed by both of them. Each piece is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is certainly something that will never be repeated! It has a second place ribbon from the 2017 Heard Indian Market.
