This is a complex engagement basket by Clara Chavarria Shije (1924-2012). She was a daughter of Pablita Chavarria and a sister of noted potters Reycita Naranjo, Elizabeth Naranjo, Millie Chavarria, and Florence Browning.  She began making pottery in the 1940s.  The engagement basket has a twisted clay handle.  Around the sides, it is carved with an avanyu. The entire piece is fully polished, even the handles!  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Clara”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
