Margaret and Luther Gutierrez were known for their clay animals. Margaret would make them and Luther would paint the designs. This is fully designed plate. In the center is a parrot and it is surrounded by an avanyu. Amazingly, there are SEVEN different colors of clay used on this piece, making it a true polychrome (i.e. more than three colors)! It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed on the bottom, “Margaret / Luther”.

Luther Gutierrez
Luther Gutierrez (1911-1987) was a son of noted potters, Lela and Van Gutierrez. He began painting his mother's pottery in 1956. They worked together until 1966, and then he began painting the pottery of his sister, Margaret. Their pieces are signed, "Margaret/Luther."
