Jason Takala has long been one of the most sought-after Hopi jewelers, creating the classic double overlay. Each piece is creatively designed, cut out of sterling silver or gold, and soldered to the second piece of silver. As long as I have known Jason, he has been fascinated with making “pottery” in silver. This is one of his larger and more complex seedpots and there is added complexity of a lid. The seedpot is made up of two pieces of silver soldered together to make the “vessel”. The design on the top is a double overlay of silver on silver. This piece is entitled “Rain Clouds on the Horizon”. The lid has a raincloud on each side, and each side has a large inset piece of turquoise. The seedpot has rain, clouds, and start designs cut into the top layer of silver. There are eight pieces of turquoise set into the top of the seedpot. The lid fits perfectly into the top of the seedpot. It is not just technically difficult but a very creative piece! The background area that is black is also stamped with the design and then oxidized black. It is a piece of exceptional complexity in design and technique. It is stamped on the back with his signature hallmark in both the lid and the vessel.
