Tafoya, Margaret – Pitcher with Painted Cloud and Rain Designs (1960s)

3.5"w x 2.5"w x 2"h

$ 650.00

This is an unusual smaller pitcher by Margaret Tafoya from the 1960s.  It is made from native clay and is in the shape of a small pitcher. The entire surface, even the handle, is fully polished!  The piece is painted with a rain and cloud design and then fired black-on-black.  It is not often we see such interesting smaller pieces by Margaret, who was known for larger work.  Why would she make something smaller like this piece?  Often, she would want to use up all the clay she had before beginning a new batch, so she would make smaller works.  As well, in the late 1950s and early 1960s, smaller pieces like this were made for the tourists coming to the Pueblo.  It’s just more unusual that they survive over time!  The piece is signed on the bottom, “Margaret Tafoya”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
