Naranjo, Madeline – Storage Jar with Three Bear Paws (1950’s)

6.5"w x 6.5"h

$ 500.00

Madeline Naranjo (b. 1916) was known for her deep carved pottery.  This piece is a classic storage jar shape with a round body and short neck. The jar has three deeply indented bear paws as the design. The entire piece is stone polished and then fired to a glassy black.   The bear paws are symbolic of a Santa Clara story that told of a bear that led the Pueblo people to water during a drought. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Madeline N.” on the bottom in the clay.  It is in nearly excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  The legacy of Madeline Naranjo continues is the work of her granddaughter Madeline E. Naranjo.
