Manymules, Samuel – “Starburts” Faceted Melon Jar (Ribbon)
$ 1,950.00
This is an exceptional shape by Samuel Manymules. It is coil-built and slipped with red clay, and then traditionally fired. The jar has a classic water neck and shape. The body of the piece has 10 sharp melon ribs pushed out from the inside. The result is a “faceted” appearance to the jar with the undulating clay angles. It is a technically difficult method by which he pushes and pulls the clay to create a distinctive form! The fire clouds encircling the piece create various colors, from red to dark black. After the firing, the jar is covered with pine pitch in the traditional way expected of Navajo pottery. It is extraordinary vessels like this that keep Samuel among the top Navajo potters working today. It is signed “SM”. It has an Honorable Mention RIbbon from the 2024 Santa Fe Indian Market.
