Talachy, Joe & Thelma – Large Polychrome Jar with Birds and Cloud Designs (1980s)

This is a large round shoulder jar by Joe Talachy (b. 1943) and Thelma Talachy (b. 1942).  They are two of the few potters from Pojoaque Pueblo in New Mexico.  Thelma is a sister of Minnie Vigil, Lois Gutierrez, and Gloria Garcia.  Their daughter, Melissa Talachy, is also a well-known potter.  Each piece is coil-built and painted with natural clay slips.  This large jar is thin-walled.  It is painted with four pairs of birds.  They are separated by rain and cloud designs.  The jar has SIX different colors of clay!  It is a colorful and visually striking jar! It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Joe & Thelma Talachy”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
