WOW!  This is an intricately painted large jar by Frederica Antonio.  She is renowned for her intricately painted pottery. Each piece is coil-built and then finely painted. Her designs are a series of fine vertical and horizontal lines which are then filled in to create larger images in the squares.  The neck of the jar has an “autumn leaves” design.  The squares are white, black, brown, red, and orange.  Interestingly, she painted the edges of the squares so that each of them almost appear oval!  The body of the jar has her smaller “micro” squares.  They swirl around the jar with her famous “four seasons” design. There are wind, rain, lightning, and snow patterns.  Note the tiny squares in contrast to those on the neck of the jar.  Separating each section is a lightning step pattern patined in three colors of clay.  The tiny lines on the jar, along with the varied colorations reflect the amount of time taken on this jar!   It is an intricate design for the size of the jar.  The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars that were carried on the head.  The jar is signed on the bottom, “F. V. Antonio”.
