Antonio, Frederica – “Sunset Lightning” Five Color Square Neck Water Jar

6.75"w x 6.25"h

$ 2,800.00

This is a visually dynamic and fully painted jar by Frederica Antonio.  The jar has a low shoulder and an elongated neck with a square opening.  The jar is coil-built and then fully painted with her small squares that are then highlighted with various clays.  This piece is a process that she rarely likes to do as it is so time-consuming. After each square on the jar is painted with bee-weed,  it is filled in with a clay slip and THEN it is painted over again so that the lines are differentiated between each color.  It is much more time-consuming, but it is also much more visually dynamic.  The design on this jar has five colors; red, orange, brown, black, and white.  The triangular designs are meant to represent the setting sun. Small white lines appear across the surface of the jar, which is the lighting in the clouds.  Note how the lightning designs glide across the surface of the jar!  The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars that were carried on the head.  This combination of thin walls, creative shapes, and tightly painted design creates a piece that is unique and quite stunning!  The jar is signed on the bottom, “Frederica Antonio”.
