This bowl by Effie Garcia combines her deep carving with etched designs by her husband, Orville.  The bowl has four deeply carved heartline bears on the shoulder.  Each bear has a lightning bolt or “heartline” carved into the center.  Each carved design is highlighted with a line of matte clay to outline the design.  The bear is a symbol of strength and good luck as are the bear’s paws.  The high polish and angle from the shoulder make this a distinctive bowl. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Effie Orville Garcia”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

Effie Garcia is known for her deep-carved pottery and traditional designs. Effie and Orville work together on their pottery. Their pottery has a distinctive form with a narrow base and broad shoulder. The carving is always deep, clean, and outlined with an additional clay slip. Effie is the daughter of Victoria Gutierrez and the granddaughter of Rosita Velarde and Faustina Gutierrez. She is also a sister of Sally Gutierrez, Eugene Gutierrez, and Ethel Yazza. Effie & Orville have won numerous awards for their pottery at Santa Fe Indian Market and other events.
