Montoya, Mary – Santa Ana Jar with Cloud and Sun Designs (1980s)

Mary Montoya (b. 1939) is one of the few potters from Santa Ana Pueblo. She learned to make pottery from Eudora Montoya during the second pottery revival beginning in 1973. This jar is coil-built and painted with Cloud and Sun designs. Both the red and white clay areas are stone polished. The rim of the jar has bird designs. The base of the bowl is also fully polished. The jar is well constructed and tightly painted. This is the second piece we have had by Mary in the gallery. It is signed on the bottom, ‘M. Montoya”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
