This is a large water jar by Lorraine Williams. The jar has a sharp shoulder and sloping sides. The bottom half of the jar is slipped red while the top is left with the natural brown of the clay. Around the neck are swirling cloud designs that extend from the rim to the shoulder. In the center of them is a band of polished tan. The designs are painted red and black to accentuate the designs and then traditionally fired to create the surface coloration. After the piece is fired it is covered in pinon-pitch. The pitch is a reminder of the historic Navajo pottery when it was utilitarian. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “LW, Lorraine Williams”. Lorraine has won numerous awards for her pottery and has been featured in books such as “A Legacy of Generations”.
