Virgil Ortiz is known for his innovative style of Cochiti pottery.  This bold figure is one of his most recent creations.  The figure is entitled, “Star Gazer” and it made from contemporary clay. The clay work on this figure is dynamic with the connections between the various wildflower spines which extend from the figure.  This is also the first piece where Virgil has carved into the clay. The carved areas on the head, shoulder and spines adds to the depth and dimension of the piece.  There is also a light shadow cast by the carving at the various levels, which is subtle but appealing.  The surface is painted with swirling designs which further enhance the form and carved designs.  It is exciting to see how Virgil continues to evolve with his Revolt 1680/2180 series and its foundation in the “Monos” figures of the 1880’s.  It is signed on the bottom.
