Aguilar, Rosalie – 9″ Wide Red Bowl with Carved Avanyu (1930s)

9.5"w x 3.5"h

$ 1,500.00

Rosalie Aguilar was known for her creative carved and painted pottery.  While she worked with her husband, Joe Aguilar, she also made pieces on her own. This large bowl is one of the few red-carved pieces we have seen of her pottery. The bowl has a wide shoulder.  It is deeply “cameo carved” with an avanyu encircling the bowl.  Note how the area below the avanyu is fully carved away! It is a very time-consuming carving style. The bowl has a tan clay silp in the background surrounding the highly polished avanyu.  Note as well the deep red of the avanyu, which is typical of the 1930s period of pottery.  The bowl is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed, “Joe + Rosalie” on the bottom in the clay.
