WOW! This is a striking large jar by Frederica Antonio. The jar is coil-built and painted with bee-weed and native clay slips. The jar is a classic Acoma water jar with a high shoulder and short neck. It has four large sections of painted design. Frederica uses a series of fine vertical and horizontal lines which are then filled in to create larger images in the squares. One of the black-on-white sections has “morning mist” squared designs, while the opposite side has elongated rain patterns. The two colorful sides are intricately painted. One has her “op-art” interlocking squares which are “MC Escher” in appearance. The opposite side has “swirling rainbows”, which are a series of colorful rectangular shapes flowing across the surface of the jar. It is elegant in shape and creative in design that matches this classic form. The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars that were carried on the head. This combination of thin walls, classic shape, and tightly painted design creates a visually stunning piece! The jar is signed on the bottom, “F. V. Antonio”.
