Frederica Antonio is renowned for her intricately painted pottery. Each piece is coil-built and then finely painted. Her designs are a series of fine vertical and horizontal lines which are then filled in to create larger images in the squares.  This jar has squares painted around the neck in black, white, and brown.  Frederica said this is the dusk at night. Below the jar is colorful with bands of streaming red and orange clay with a wind pattern painted across the surface.  The colors are meant to represent the rising sun with the light wind of the early morning.  It is a colorful and complex piece! The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars that were carried on the head.  The jar is signed on the bottom, “F. V. Antonio”.
