Antonio, Frederica – Five Color Star Design Jar with Micro Square Clouds
Frederica Antonio is renowned for her intricately painted pottery. Each piece is coil built and then finely painted. Her designs are a series of fine vertical and horizontal lines which are then filled in to create larger images in the squares. This jar is very intricate in design. Around the sides are large star patterns painted with three different colors of clay slip. The designs inside the star patterns are the same as the piece is turned. However, it is the design on the top and bottom that interesting. On those sections, which represent clouds, she has painted her “micro squares”. They are even smaller squares than she normally paints on her pieces! The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars which were carried on the head. This combination of thin walls, classic shape, and tightly painted design creates a piece that is visually stunning! The jar is signed on the bottom, “F. A. Antonio”.
