Antonio, Frederica – “Interlocking Stars” Square Neck Jar

6.25"w x 6.5"h

$ 3,200.00

This is a visually dynamic and fully painted jar by Frederica Antonio.  The jar has a low shoulder and an elongated neck.  Each piece is coil-built and then finely painted.  This jar is fully painted with her small squares that are then highlighted with various clays.  This piece is a process that she rarely likes to do as it is so time-consuming. After each square on the jar is painted with bee-weed, it is filled in with a clay slip and THEN it is painted over again so that the lines are differentiated between each color.  It is much more time-consuming, but it is also much more visually dynamic.  As well, it is not often she paints an entire piece in this style!  The coloration creates a series of interlocking stars that extend from the rim to near the base.  The square shape accentuates this design.  The neck of the jar is indented and the rim is square in shape.  The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars that were carried on the head.  This combination of thin walls, creative shapes, and tightly painted design creates a piece that is unique and quite stunning!  The jar is signed on the bottom, “Frederica Antonio”.
