This is a visually striking jar by Frederica Antonio. Each piece is coil built and then finely painted. Her designs are a series of fine vertical and horizontal lines that are then filled in to create larger images in the squares. This jar is very intricate in design. Around the neck is a combination of shapes with triangles and squares. Looking at it vertically, they are meant to be flower blossoms. Interestingly, after she has painted the clay slips onto the jar, she has to go back and paint over them a second time so that the black stands out over the colors! However, it is the body of the jar which is the most complex. There are two sections with stylized flowers and two with rain. Extending from the neck to the base are elongated slighting patterns that are painted in tan and red clay slips. It is an elegant jar that draws the eye both vertically and horizontally and then mesmerizes us with the small details! The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars which were carried on the head. This combination of thin walls, classic shape, and tightly painted designs are the signature of Frederica’s dynamic pottery. The jar is signed on the bottom, “Frederica Antonio”.
