Antonio, Frederica – Long Neck Jar with Rain, Snow, Rainbow and Star Patterns
Frederica Antonio is renowned for her intricately painted pottery. Each piece is coil built and then finely painted. Her designs are a series of fine vertical and horizontal lines that are then filled in to create larger images in the squares. This is a classic long neck jar with a slightly turned out rim. The jar has four sections of design, each of which is different. There are stars and a diamond-shaped “rainbow” pattern. There are small snow designs and an angular painted rain design. Take a closer look at the designs, as they are mostly painted at an angle, which Frederica says is always more difficult. The inside of the neck is painted with two colors of red clay, creating a “sunrise” appearance. The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars that were carried on the head. This combination of thin walls, classic shape, and tightly painted design creates a piece that is visually stunning! The jar is signed on the bottom, “Frederica Antonio”.
