Blue Corn – Polychrome Jar with Rain and Cloud Designs (1970s)

6"w x 5"h

$ 975.00

This is a classic four-color polychrome jar by Blue Corn.  She is certainly one of the most creative potters of her time with a varied use of clays and firing techniques to create her distinctive pottery. The jar has a classic San Ildefonso form with a low shoulder and sloping sides. The jar is fully polished to a blue-gray coloration.  It was painted with red, black, and green clay slips.  There are sections with rain clouds and mesas and they are separated by elongated cloud sections.  The designs are accented with additional clay colors. The shoulder has a band of green clay and the rim is red.  It is always fascinating to see how Blue Corn used various colors to accentuate the tightly painted designs.  This jar is a true polychrome with more than three different colorations.  The piece was traditionally fired.  It is signed on the bottom, “Blue Corn”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
