Cain, Mary – 9″ Tall Red Bowl with Carved Avanyu (1970s)

8"w x 9"h

$ 1,200.00

Mary Cain was a daughter of Christina Naranjo and a granddaughter of Sara Fina Tafoya.  She was known for her classic style of carved and polished Santa Clara pottery.  This large bowl is from the 1970s.  It is round in shape and deeply carved with her classic water serpent that encircles the piece.  It is one of the largest redware pieces of her work we have had in the gallery.   As the bowl is turned, there are rain, clouds, and lightning designs.  Note how the design uses negative space from the rim and the base to accentuate the avanyu.  The bowl is fully polished and traditionally fired red. It is signed on the bottom, “Mary Cain”.    It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  Definitely a classic of her pottery style!
