Candelaria, Daryl – Large Pottery “Shard” and San Felipe Designs Open Bowl (1990s)

12"w x 5.5"h

$ 1,600.00

Daryl Candelaria is one of the few potters working at San Felipe Pueblo.  He studied both historic and contemporary pottery at the School of American Research in Santa Fe, NM.  This large open bowl combines traditional San Felipe designs on the outside, and his classic “Shard” sections on the inside.  On the outside, there are classic cloud and plant designs. On the inside, there are a variety of “shards” that make up the design.  What makes it so extraordinary is that each shard is either painted, polished or carved in a representative manner the various Pueblos.  Few potters have the technical ability to create so many diverse surfaces, let alone on one vessel!  In the center is a Mimbres style bowl in black-and-white.  Surrounding it are black-on-black, red-on-red, micaceous, gunemtal, and plainware styles.  Shards also include Acoma, Zia, Laguna, Zuni, and other designs.  Amazingly the various styles and techniques blend beautifully on the jar and complement the more classic San Felipe imagery on the outside.   It is signed by the artist and it is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  What a perfect way to portray the history and techniques of Pueblo pottery in one vessel!
