This is a classic bowl by Marie Z. Chino.  Marie is famous as one of the revivalists at Acoma Pueblo, along with Lucy M. Lewis, Jessie Garcia, and a few others.  This bowl is thin-walled and tightly painted.  There are angular “Tularosa Swirls” that are black and fine-line. They are surrounded by angular lightning designs.  It is a complex and creative use of ancient imagery.  The bowl was traditionally fired so there are some very slight color variations to the white.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It signed, “Marie Z. Chino”.

Marie Z. Chino

Marie Zieu Chino is one of the great matriarchs of Acoma pueblo. Her children and grandchildren are numerous and include potters Grace Chino, Rose Chino, Tena Garcia, Carol Chino, and others. Her pottery forms are amazingly uniform and renowned for being a perfect blend of form and design. Marie Z. Chino's pottery can be found in the book "14 Families in Pueblo Pottery," along with numerous other publications.
