Chino, Marie Z. – Jar with Cloud and Mountain Designs (1969)
This is a classic jar by Marie Z. Chino. Marie is famous as one of the revivalists at Acoma Pueblo, along with Lucy M. Lewis, Jessie Garcia, and a few others. This jar is thin-walled and tightly painted. There are cloud designs painted extending down from the rim and mountains extending up from near the base. The step patterns are highlighted with linear rain designs. The black-and-white designs give the jar a very graphic and modernist appearance. The jar was traditionally fired so there are some very slight color variations to the white. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. There are two tiny areas of spalling. The jar is signed on the inside of the mouth, “Marie Z. Chino”. Interestingly, I have had pieces by both Marie Z. Chino and Lucy Lewis where they are signed on the inside. It always makes me wonder if it was just the challenge of signing on the inside or if for a while they were worried about signatures coming off the bottom. It makes for a nice variation. This jar was originally purchased in 1969. It is definitely a classic jar where shape, history, and design are in perfect balance!
