Chino, Marie Z. – Jar with Star and Cloud Designs (1970s)

6"w x 5.25"h

$ 900.00

This is a detailed jar by Marie Z. Chino.  Marie is famous as one of the revivalists at Acoma Pueblo, along with Lucy M. Lewis, Jessie Garcia, and a few others.  This jar is thin-walled and tightly painted.  There are four large sections with fine-line star patterns. Separating them are triangular cloud designs.  The black-and-white designs give the jar a very graphic and modernist appearance.  The jar was traditionally fired so there are some very slight color variations to the white.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  There are a few small areas of spalling, which is typical of this time period in Acoma pottery.  It is signed on the bottom, “Marie Z. Chino”.  It is always interesting to come across an unusual design that adds to our understanding of the creativity of this important Acoma potter!
