Chino, Marie Z. – Large Canteen with Heartline Deer and Water Designs (1960s)

9"w x 9"h

$ 2,400.00

This is a striking large canteen by Marie Z. Chino.  Marie is famous as one of the revivalists at Acoma Pueblo, along with Lucy M. Lewis, Jessie Garcia, and a few others.  The canteen is coil built and painted with bee-weed (black) and a red clay slip.  The canteen is built so that it sits at an angle.  The entire front is painted with design. There is a large heartline deer in the center.  The heartline deer are classic to both Acoma and Zuni pottery, with the heartline signifying the center, spirit or, “heart” of the animal. Surrounding the deer is a complex interlocking wave design.  The handles of the canteen are twisted, which adds to the difficulity.  The jar was traditionally fired which creates some color variations on the surface.  It is signed, “Marie Z. Chino”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
