Chino, Marie Z. – Large Jar with Heartline Deer and Acoma Birds (1970s)

10.5"w x 9"h

$ 3,300.00

This is an intricately painted large jar by Marie Z. Chino.  Marie is famous as one of the revivalists at Acoma Pueblo, along with Lucy M. Lewis, Jessie Garcia, and a few others.  This jar is thin-walled and painted with bee-weed (black) and red clay slip.  The neck of the jar has rain, lighting, and rainbird designs.  The designs are filled in with thin lines. Around the shoulder of the jar are panels with heartline deer, parrots, and star patterns. The designs are tightly painted.  The base of the jar has additional lighting, rain, and rainbird patterns.  The imagery on the jar is complex and tightly painted.  The piece was traditionally fired so there are some very slight color variations to the white.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair but there is a slight lean to the jar.   It is signed on the bottom, “Marie Z. Chino”.  It is always interesting to come across an unusual design that adds to our understanding of the creativity of this important Acoma potter!
